Background:
Cast page! Toni is about halfway down the page.
Info dump! A whole bunch of facts collected from various interviews and such on Deviantart. Again, Toni is the fifth or so list.
HINABN chronicles the misadventures of one Hanna Falk Cross and the various people that get swept up in his torrent of hyperactivity and paranormal investigation. Toni just happens to be one of those people. She popped up in the second chapter, asking Hanna for help in dealing with a ghost that was screwing up her theater group’s production by breaking things whenever the lead actress sang off-key.
To make a long story short, Hanna and Zombie took care of the ghost problem. At least, they gave it the old college try.
Meanwhile, Toni and Conrad the wussy vampire waited outside, where they were then accosted by the douchebag extraordinaire vampires, Casimiro and Finas. They attempted to beat the crap out of Conrad, but were stopped when Toni decided to go all howling deathbeast on them. Eventually, they all decided to settle things over a game of poker until Hanna and Zombie emerged from the theater, upon which Cas and Finas revealed their reason for lurking around. The duo were after Hanna in regards to yet another vampire, one Adelaide, who happened to be Conrad’s sire and whom Hanna had helped return to human form in the previous chapter. They were not at all pleased that Hanna had removed her curse, and they wanted him to track her down. To make sure he would follow through, Cas threatened to kill not only Hanna but also everyone present in the alley outside of the theater if he didn’t deliver the Sassybat. “Everyone present” included Zombie, Conrad, Veser and, of course, Toni.
And that’s where the comic has left off, at least for everyone who’s not Hanna and Zombie.
Toni’s past before meeting Hanna is still shrouded in mystery. Even in the cast interviews, she carefully dodges any question she gets regarding how she became a werewolf, claiming that it’s a touchy subject. The closest answer anyone’s gotten is that she became one in the 1980s, although whether she was cursed or born that way is still up for debate. Interestingly enough, she’s also mentioned that if she could have one wish granted it would be to cheat death and bring someone back to life. While it’s likely that her life isn’t as marred with tragedy as, say, Veser’s, it probably wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows, either.
Personality:
Toni’s outward appearance, from her thrift-shop ensembles to her blue and black mohawked hair, all but screams “I am an ARTIST, you cannot UNDERSTAND me.” And while it’s true that Toni loves the art scene and is an actress, she’s pretty down to earth, outgoing, and friendly- pretty much the exact opposite of your stereotypical theater snob. In fact, Toni is extremely extroverted and polite. She has no problem approaching strangers for help with paranormal problems and offering to take them out to dinner as payment, for example. She gets pretty chummy with anyone quickly after meeting them, not unlike a dog that showers each new person they meet with love and attention.
Toni is passionate! You have to be when you’re an artist, after all. Once she sets her mind to something, she will accomplish it come hell or high water. This extends to just about everything in her life, including the people she meets. You can be sure that if she decides she likes you, then she really does like you. Possibly to the point of fighting anyone who thinks otherwise. On the other hand, if she decides she doesn’t like you? Back the fuck up. The same goes for everything else, as she sees things in black and white (insert joke about dogs being colorblind here), love it or hate it terms. It’s no surprise that she can come off as very stubborn, as it takes a lot to get her to change her mind about anything once she's formed an opinion on it.
She’s pretty perceptive. When Hanna and co. arrived to help her at the haunted theater, it took her little more than a casual glance at Zombie and Conrad for her to tell that Hanna was the real deal. Granted, Zombie was pretty obvious, but she was still able to tell that Conrad’s fang wasn’t just a misshaped tooth. Not only is she pretty good at reading people, but she might also have heightened senses thanks to her lycanthropy, since she heard Finas and Casimiro approaching before Conrad did (and before Casimiro kicked him in the face).
She’s not at all bothered by ghosts, zombies, aliens and monsters, which is likely due to the fact that she herself is a werewolf and is pretty used to all sorts of weird stuff. When the other people in her theater troupe scoff at the “ghost hunters”, Toni considers Hanna a professional after realizing what kind of people he hangs out which (i.e. Zombie and Conrad). When she arrives at Doc Worth’s place to check on Hanna after his run-in with the ghost, Hanna seems pleasantly surprised that she showed up, possibly denoting that most “normal” people would have been scared off by the supernatural activity... and the general skeevyness of Worth’s back alley practice.
It’s not blatant, but it’s likely that Toni is not entirely fond of vampires. In the cast interviews, it’s been tossed around that vampires are the reason werewolves are rare, and Toni has mentioned that Casimiro is an okay guy “for a vampire” (although she’s also called him a “parasitic sleazebag” in the comic, so.). She doesn’t seem to have a problem with Conrad, however, but that might be due to the fact that he’s a wimp and she could kick his ass any day of the week.
Abilities: Toni is a werewolf, rar. Werewolves in the Hannaverse are apparently pretty rare, but it’s understood that they follow a lot of the popular lore associated with them: they transform under a full moon, are weak to silver, etc. Toni, however, has figured out how to force the transformation regardless of the current moon phase. When Toni transforms she looks more like some kind of spectral force than an animal, but it hasn’t been clarified yet if that’s just part of the comic style or if HINABN’s werewolves are just different.
Sample Entry:
Hey guys, I’ve been thinking. You know how that clothing store downtown only has boring old grandma clothes, right? I think with a little work, you could turn them into something that’s actually wearable! I’m no sewing expert, but I’ve helped with costume design before, I’m sure I could whip up something pretty cool. Who wants to go shopping?
By the way, did Kool-Aid exist in the 50s? I can’t find any good hair-dye for sale anywhere so I guess I’m going the homemade route!
